Suarez hopes Real Madrid will pick him to bolster the attack

Liverpool are preparing for Luis Suarez’s inevitable departure. They have done everything in their power, they say, to convince the player to stay in Merseyside, but he wants to take a competitive and geographic leap. Suarez wants to win league titles and compete in Europe at the highest level (Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season).

Suarez feels very comfortable at Liverpool, who have treated him as their big star and have supported him during tough times, but life in England is not ideal for his family. They are having trouble mastering the language and are spending a lot of time at home, as Liverpool does not offer many recreational options if you are a footballer.

Suarez’s in-laws live in Castelldefels, Catalonia, where he and his wife regularly go to escape the eternal British winter. His main aim is to play in La Liga and two clubs offer him this possibility: Atletico, who spoke with his representatives two months ago to inform them they saw him as the successor to Falcao, and Real Madrid. They are not the only interested clubs. Manchester City are keen to land the striker if their move for Edinson Cavani fails, Juventus would rather sign the Uruguayan than Gonzalo Higuain, and Chelsea are looking for a forward of his profile (what’s more, Mourinho is a big fan).

The footballer could have been named player of the year by the footballers and the press, were it not for the incident with Branislav Ivanovic (when he bit the Chelsea defender), which made him fall down in the estimation of many people in England.

His goals (he was the second top scorer in the Premier League last season with 23 goals, and scored 30 in 44 matches in all competitions) and his knack for creating chances out of nothing has made him the most effective striker of the year.

Suarez renewed his contract last summer and his new deal expires in 2016. His buy-out clause is around 35 million euros, which is not a prohibitive figure for a goalscorer for his quality. Brendan Rodgers, the Liverpool manager, is now looking for a substitute and is ready to invest in a striker with a big reputation, and knows he can find many of these players from La Liga (Spanish League) that fit the bill.

While speculation grows about his future, Luis Suarez has been relaxing in Uruguay, enjoying a few days’ holiday in Punta del Este with his family before joining the Uruguay national team last Tuesday for a training camp before the matches with Venezuela and France. When he got to the training ground assembled journalists asked him about the interest from Real Madrid and his possible transfer to white team, Suarez remained silent, but gave a cheeky smile.
